What I Noticed at My First U.S. Trade Show — And What It Means for Exhibitors

Earlier this summer, I had the chance to attend my first American trade show — the IFT First event at McCormick Place in Chicago — alongside my colleagues from Ion Exhibit Group.

While I’ve had some experience with European exhibitions, this was my first time walking a major U.S. show floor. I wasn’t there just to observe — I was looking at booths through a marketer’s eyes: what worked, what didn’t, and what small details made a big difference.

Here’s what stood out to me.

1. The Show Floor Is Massive — And So Is the Opportunity

McCormick Place is huge. I wore comfortable shoes, and I still felt it by the end of the day. But beyond the size, what struck me most was the range of booth styles and quality

Some brands had large, impressive spaces — but their logos were hard to find or didn’t stand out. A few used high-end LED walls, but the tiles didn’t match, breaking the visual flow. These little things can seriously affect how professional and trustworthy a brand feels.

2. Small Booths Can Shine — But Only If You Care About the Details

Not all small booths made a strong impression. I noticed quite a few where the signage was wrinkled, graphics were misaligned, and the overall space felt cluttered or unfinished. It was clear that even a well-intentioned design can fall flat without paying attention to the basics.

But then there were others — smaller booths that stood out beautifully. These didn’t try to do too much. They kept things simple, but effective. What made them memorable was:

  • Crisp, wrinkle-free signage
  • Aligned and balanced visuals
  • Consistent colors and clear brand messaging
  • Smart layout that didn’t overcrowd the space

These elements cost very little, but they showed care and effort — and made a big impact. At Ion Exhibit Group, I’ve seen how our team makes these details a priority, helping brands look polished and professional, even in smaller footprints.

3. Presence Over Perfection

I also noticed that the people inside the booths made a big difference. Most were friendly and welcoming, but there were definitely a few who stayed glued to their phones — missing real opportunities to connect.

Even the best-designed booth needs engaged, present staff to bring it to life.

4. Practical Tips I Learned

There were a few small things that caught me off guard — or just turned out to be good reminders for anyone attending a U.S. trade show for the first time:

  • Printed business cards are still a thing. I expected more digital exchanges, but many people still prefer the classic paper card.
  • Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable. (Seriously — I know I already mentioned it, but it’s worth repeating.)
  • It’s a long day. Pack light, bring a water bottle, and pace yourself.

Attending my first American trade show was inspiring, exhausting, and eye-opening — in the best way. I saw firsthand how much the small choices matter: a steamed banner, a visible logo, a present team member. These are the things that build trust and visibility.

And this is exactly where Ion Exhibit Group excels. Our team knows how to turn even a modest space into something memorable — not with flashy gimmicks, but with thoughtful design and careful execution.

I’m excited to keep learning and supporting clients as they bring their brands to life — one show at a time.
